Preferred Specimen
2 slides from suspect vesicle or pustule


Instructions
  1. With a #2 lead pencil, label the frosted end of a clean glass slide with two patient identifiers (full name, DOB or MR), and the specimen source.
  2. Wipe lesion with an alcohol prep pad and allow to dry.
  3. Open vesicle or pustule or remove the crusted area with a sterile scalpel blade.
  4. Scrape the lesion vigorously with the edge of a scalpel blade. Smear this material gently several times to a glass slide
  5. Preferred: rapidly fix with spray fixative.
  • Acceptable: allow to air dry.
  1. Place slide in a protective slide holder supplied.
  2. Label the slide holder with two patient identifiers (full name, DOB or MR) test requested, specimen source, and date and time of collection. Indicate if spray fixed or air dried.
  3. Forward promptly at ambient temperature only.
Note:
  1. Specimen source and Clinical History/Diagnosis is required on request form for processing.
  2. NOCO Staff - Please send Cytology Order Requisistion to Summit Pathology with specimen.
