This test can be done on Pleural Fluid, Pericardial Fluid, and Peritoneal Fluid. Any other fluid type must be sent to a reference laboratory.

Preferred Specimen
Hospital Nursing Unit Collections: Use a sterile container for 1.0 mL sample collection.
 
Labs Sending to Hub Sites
  • Preferred Specimen: Red-top vacutainer or other tube without additives or separators.
  • NOTE for Hub Sites: EDTA and Lithium Heparin additives should not be rejected. If the sample arrives in an unspun separator tube, transfer it to a plain tube with no separator before centrifugation.
