Other Acceptable Specimens
2 mL whole blood in heparin blood gas syringe


Instructions
Specimen must arrive within 1 hour of draw.
  • Cap syringe tightly, remove any air bubbles.
  • If there is a delay in transport > 30 minutes, send specimen on crushed ice.

0.5-1.5% of total hemoglobin
Critical value (automatic call-back):  >20.0%
Interpretation:
  • 0-1% Rural non-smokers
  • 1-2% Urban, non-smokers
  • 5-10% Smokers
  • 10-12% Newborn
  • >25% Acute toxicity
Symptoms:
  • >10% Dizziness, headache, dyspnea, impaired judgement
  • >30% Nausea, vomiting, syncope, tachycard
  • >50% Coma, respiratory failure, death
