Instructions
SAMPLE COLLECTION FOR SCABIES
1) Look for burrows on skin surface (serpentine, red-line marking tunnels or unexcoriated papules). 80% of mites are found in webbing between the fingers or the folds of wrists. Other areas to examine are shoulders, back, abdomen, elbows, buttocks, axillae, under the breasts, behind the knees and on the thighs. 2) Place a drop of mineral oil on the lesions to be scraped and spread oil over area to be sampled. 3) Pull skin taut and scrape with surgical blade or hypodermic needle.

THEN USE THE FOLLOWING METHODS:
A) Transfer scrapings from the needle/blade to prepared slides (slide labeled with patient name and MR# and small drop of mineral oil placed in center of slides). Place cover slip on each slide. Secure cover slip by placing a small drop of nail polish on each edge of the cover slip. Do not completely seal. DO NOT USE THIS METHOD IF YOU DO NOT HAVE NAIL POLISH to seal the edges. Place slides in cardboard slide mailer and take immediately to laboratory.
OR
B) Transfer skin scrapings to a small clean, dry container and cover with 2-3 drops of formalin (preferred) or 70-90% alcohol. NOTE: the liquid must cover the scrapings. Secure lid, label container with patient information and send to laboratory.
