Instructions
To test for: Adrenal cortisol insufficiency, Addison’s Disease, dexamethasone suppression, decadron suppression, cortisol stimulation or cortrosyn stimulation.
  • Inpatients: Draw baseline cortisol. Nurse administers 250 µg of cortrosyn intramuscularly or intravenously. Note time. Draw a 30-minute and a 60-minute cortisol after injection. Obtain a 90-minute specimen, if desired.
  • NOCO Outpatients: Contact Outpatient Oncology at 970-378-3807 to schedule test.

Reference Range
A normal response cutoff for cosyntropin (ACTH) stimulation is considered a peak cortisol >13.5 mcg/dL (intravenous ACTH) or >12.0 mcg/dL (intramuscular ACTH).
