If it is discovered after reaching the laboratory that a specimen is a suspected or known positive CJD case, utilizing two pairs of gloves, disposable face shield and disposable laboratory coat, immediately place the specimen in a double-biohazard bag clearly labeled as “suspect CJD” and then stored at 2-8° C. The biohazard bags must be stapled shut to prevent any other specimens being placed inside this bag.

Use disposable supplies whenever possible to immediately clean any surfaces the specimen came into contact with. All disposable instruments that have been in contact with high infectivity tissues should be clearly identified and disposed of by incineration.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF): Ship double boxed using a Styrofoam container with sufficient dry ice (5 lbs/24 hrs).
