Clinical Significance
Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic infection caused by the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii. Infection occurs via undercooked meat, contaminated water or contact with cat feces. Most immunocompetent individuals if infected are asymptomatic or have very few symptoms, although Toxoplasma can persitst for long periods in the body, perhaps even a lifetime. Pregnant women newly infected are at risk of a congenital infection and those weakend immune system may expierence severe toxoplasmosis. The presense of anti-Toxoplama IgG indicates that the individual has been previously exposed to T. gondii, whereas an individual positive for IgM indicates a more recent infection.
