Genital Culture

Message
This order is for routine culture from a genital source.
NOTE: This culture type does not rule out Group B Strep. For Genital Strep Screen Prenatal, (specifically for Group B Strep), order C GSTR
For anaerobic culture refer to C ANA

Test Code
C GEN

Includes
Routine culture includes examination for potential pathogens, and GC (Neisseria gonorrhoeae). Presence of normal usual flora will be reported.

Preferred Specimen
Vaginal, endocervical, or urethral - exudate or material collected on eSwab or culture swabs.
Bartholin Cyst - Aspirated specimen in a sterile container or specimen received on culture swab.
Culdocentesis (Cul De Sac) - Surgical prep and syringe/needle aspiration through the posterior vaginal vault.  1-5 ml fluid or pus transfered to a sterile container. Additional material should be submitted in an anaerobic transport tube, if considering anaerobes.

Minimum Volume
For Aspirated samples - 1 ml

Instructions
Describe exact source such as endocervix, urethral, vaginal, amniotic fluid, bartholin cyst or culdocentesis (Cul De Sac).

Transport Container
ESwab or culture swabs.
Aspirates - sterile screw capped container.

Transport Temperature
Ambient / Room temperature

Specimen Stability
Transport all specimens at ambient / room temperature
Send to the Lab within 2 hours of collection.
Specimen should be received in lab in <24 hours

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Unacceptable specimens:
Dry swabs
Swab of amniotic fluid aspirate is not acceptable (fluid is required).
Refrigerated or frozen specimens
Swabs other than routine culture swabs, such as from collection kits for Amplified Probe or other DNA testing.
Excessive transport time (>24 hours). Any specimen received after 24 hours will be rejected and the test cancelled, unless irretrievable

Report Available
A preliminary culture report will be available <24 hours.
A final negative culture report will be generated <3 days.
All positive cultures will be reported immediately.

Clinical Significance
The significance of any isolate(s), in pure or mixed culture, must be assessed with respect to the source cultured, the organism's pathogenic potential, the possibility of colonization versus infection, and the number of other organisms recovered from the same culture
