Fibrinogen

Fibrinogen is a plasma protein which is converted from a soluble protein to an insoluble polymer by the action of thrombin resulting in the formation of a fibrin clot.

Preferred Specimen
Whole blood collected in a blue sodium citrate tube


Minimum Volume
Tube must be filled completely


Specimen Stability
Plasma should be tested within 4 hours of collection at room temperature (20 - 25oC).  If testing can not be done at this time, centrifuge the sample to obtain platelet poor plasma (PPP).  Remove the PPP from the cells and freeze at -70oC.


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Specimens that are clotted, collected in the wrong tube, have visible gross hemolysis or have less than the expected fill.
