Preferred Specimen
Entire collection or 5 mm fresh tissue or biopsy from small intestine tissue (duodenum, ileum, or jejunum) submitted in a sterile container

Other Acceptable Specimens
Fixed tissue or biopsy paraffin-embedded block from brain, gastrointestinal tissue, heart valve, lymph node, small intestine, synovial tissue, or other visceral tissue submitted in a sterile container • Minimum 0.5 mL spinal, synovial, or vitreous humor fluid submitted in a sterile plastic vial

Instructions

Submit only 1 of the following specimens
Preferred: Fresh tissue or biopsy (preferred)
Sources: Small intestine tissue (duodenum, ileum, or jejunum)
Collection Instructions: Collect fresh tissue specimen
Specimen Volume: Entire collection or 5mm

Acceptable: Tissue or biopsy specimen of brain, gastrointestinal tissue, heart valve, lymph node, small intestine, synovial tissue, or other visceral tissue fixed in a paraffin block
Container/Tube: Sterile container

Acceptable: Spinal, synovial, or vitreous humor fluid
Container/Tube: Sterile vial
Specimen Volume: 0.5 mL

Specimens grossly contaminated with blood may inhibit the PCR and produce false-negative results.

The high sensitivity of amplification by PCR requires the specimen to be processed in an environment in which contamination of the specimen by Tropheryma whipplei DNA is not likely.

Transport Container
Sterile container or sterile vial

Transport Temperature
Fresh tissue (preferred): Frozen
Paraffin-embedded tissue block: Room temperature
Fluids: Refrigerated (cold packs)

Specimen Stability
Fresh tissue or biopsy
Room temperature: Unacceptable
Refrigerated: <48 hours
Frozen: 7 days

Paraffin-embedded tissue block
Room temperature: indefinitely
Refrigerated: Indefinitely
Frozen: Indefinitely
