Patient Preparation
Collect peak 30 minutes after end of IV infusion or 60-90 minutes after IM dose.
Collect as a trough just prior to next dose.

Plasma collected in each of two separate: EDTA (lavender-top) tubes, sodium heparin (green-top) tubes, lithium heparin (green-top) tubes, 3.2% sodium citrate (light blue-top) tubes or fluoride/oxalate (gray-top) tubes

Clinical Significance
Tobramycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic used in the treatment of gram-negative bacterial infections, especially Pseudomonas, Proteus, Klebsiella and also Staphylococcus. Tobramycin is potentially nephrotoxic and ototoxic and serial monitoring of peak and trough serum levels may provide the clinician with information to maintain safe and therapeutic levels.
