Clinical Significance
Western line blot aids in the identification of specific anti-neuronal autoantibodies which can help establish a paraneoplastic syndrome diagnosis and may aid identification of the likely underlying tumor. The most commonly associated malignancies include small cell lung, breast and ovarian cancers, and hematologic malignancies. Clinical presentation of a given antibody may differ amongst patients; different antibodies may cause similar or identical clinical presentations. Paraneoplastic antibodies may be found in the absence of identifiable tumor.
