Preferred Specimen
Blood and plasma or serum are required. Blood
Draw blood in a lavender-top (EDTA) tube, and send 3 to 5 mL of whole blood.
Note: 1. Include diagnosis, history of transfusions, and pregnancy on request form.
2. Indicate whole blood.
3. Label specimen appropriately (whole blood).
Submit only 1 of the following specimens:
Plasma
Draw blood in a lavender-top (EDTA) tube. Spin specimen down and send 3 to 5 mL of plasma.
Note: 1. Include diagnosis, history of transfusions, and pregnancy on request form.
2. Indicate plasma.
3. Label specimen appropriately (plasma).
Serum
Draw blood in a plain, red-top tube. Spin specimen down and send 5 to 10 mL of serum.
Note: 1. Include diagnosis, history of transfusions, and pregnancy on request form.
2. Indicate serum.
3. Label specimen appropriately (serum).

Reference Range
Negative

If positive, antibodies will be identified and corresponding special red cell antigen typing on patient's red blood cells will be performed.
