Preferred Specimen
Submit one of the following for creatinine testing on
urine, serum, or plasma.


Note: For urine creatinine clearance testing, a plasma
or serum tube must also be sent along with the urine
specimen.



Plasma

Draw blood in a green-top (lithium heparin) tube. Spin specimen
down and send 1 mL of plasma.

Note: 1. Indicate plasma.

2. Label specimen appropriately (plasma).


Serum

Draw blood in a plain, red-top tube. Spin specimen down and send
1 mL of serum.

Note: 1. Indicate serum.

2. Label specimen appropriately (serum).


Urine

1 mL from a  12-hour, 24-hour,  random urine
collection, or 24 hour urine creatinine clearance collection.
No preservative. Follow instructions in Urine
Collections in Special Instructions.

Note: 1. Starting
and ending times of collection are required.


2. Indicate urine.

3. Label specimen appropriately (urine).

4. For Urine Creatinine Clearance collections, a
serum or plasma specimen should also be collected for creatinine
testing
.
