Preferred Specimen
Testing should be performed within 24 hours of draw. Draw blood in a blue-top (sodium citrate) tube. Spin specimen down and send 2 mL of plasma in plastic vial. If testing is delayed plasma should be placed in a tightly-sealing tube and may be stored frozen for up to 2 weeks.

Critical value: greater than normal range on pre-Op patients not receiving anticoagulant

INR >2.0 on patients not receiving anticoagulant therapy
