Preferred Specimen
Submit only 1 of the following specimens:
Plasma
Draw blood in a green-top (lithium heparin) tube. Spin specimen
down and send 1 mL of plasma.
Note: 1. Indicate plasma.
2. Label specimen appropriately (plasma).
Serum
Draw blood in a plain, red-top tube. Spin specimen down and send
1 mL of serum.
Note: 1. Indicate serum.
2. Label specimen appropriately (serum).
Spinal Fluid
1 mL of spinal fluid.
Note: 1. Indicate spinal fluid.
2. Label specimen appropriately (spinal fluid).
Urine
1 mL from a 12-hour, 24-hour or random urine collection. No
preservative. Follow instructions in Urine
Collections in Special Instructions.
Note: 1. Starting
and ending times of collection are required.
2. Indicate urine.
3. Label specimen appropriately (urine).
Pleural Fluid
200 uL minimum, 500 uL optimum
