Preferred Specimen
Preparation of Patient and Collection of
Blood
1. Choose vein to be drawn by touching skin before it
has been disinfected.
2. Cleanse skin over venipuncture site in a circle
approximately 5 cm in diameter with 70% alcohol, rubbing
vigorously.
3. Starting in center of circle, apply 2% iodine (or
povidone-iodine) in ever-widening circles until entire circle
has been saturated with iodine.
4. Do not touch site after preparation.
5. Insert needle into vein and withdraw blood.
6. Clean tops of Isolator blood culture tube with
alcohol and iodine. Wipe off iodine before injecting blood
into culture tube.
7. Label specimen appropriately..
Volume Requirements
1. Collect specimen using an Isolator blood culture tube.
2. Send 7 to 10 mL of blood.
Note: Specimen source is required.
