Preferred Specimen
Preparation of Patient and Collection of
Blood
1. Cleanse skin over venipuncture site in a circle
approximately 5 cm in diameter with 70% alcohol, rubbing
vigorously.
2. Starting in center of circle, apply Chlora prep in
ever-widening circles until entire circle has been saturated
with iodine.
3. Insert needle into vein and withdraw blood.
Clean tops of bottle with alcohol before injecting blood
into culture bottle.
4. Label bottle appropriately, date and time of draw, and type
of specimen.
Specimen Volume
8 to 10 mL of blood in a BACTEC Aerobic/F (grey) culture
bottle with ARD and 8 to 10 mL of blood in a BACTEC
Anaerobic/F (orange) culture bottle with ARD. Do not
overfill bottle.
