Preferred Specimen
Submit only 1 of the following specimens: Plasma
Draw blood in a green-top (lithium heparin) tube, purple-top (EDTA) tube, or a grey-top (potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride) tube. Spin specimen down and send 0.5 mL of plasma. Separate from cells as soon as drawn if not placed in grey-top (potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride) tube.
Note: 1. Indicate plasma.
2. Label specimen appropriately (plasma).
Serum
Draw blood in a plain, red-top tube. Spin specimen down and send 0.5 mL of serum. Separate from cells as soon as drawn if not placed in grey-top (potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride) tube.
Note: 1. Indicate serum.
2. Label specimen appropriately (serum).
Spinal Fluid
0.5 mL of spinal fluid in a plastic vial.
Note: 1. Indicate spinal fluid.
2. Label specimen appropriately (spinal fluid).
