Preferred Specimen
Patient Preparation Patient should be fasting for 12 hours prior to start of test. A blood specimen for a fasting glucose determination is drawn. Fasting glucose will be performed prior to continuing test. If fasting glucose is >140 mg/dL, the clinical pathologist on duty will be notified and test will be cancelled. If fasting glucose is <140 mg/dL, procedure will continue. Patient is not allowed to eat or drink anything during procedure except water. Smoking and exercise are also prohibited. Blood specimens will be drawn at 1-hour, 2-hours, and 3-hours past administration of glucose solution depending on request of physician. If no time is specified by the physician, a 3-hour tolerance will be performed.
Specimen Collection
Submit only 1 of the following specimens:
Plasma
1. After fasting specimen is drawn, patient is given a:
A. 75 g glucose challenge dose (if not pregnant)
B. 100 g glucose challenge dose (if pregnant)
2. Draw blood in a green-top (sodium heparin) tubes at: 1-hour, 2-hours, and 3-hours after glucose solution is administered.
Note: 1. Label specimens with the appropriate timed interval.
2. Indicate plasma.
3. Label specimen appropriately (plasma).
Serum
1. After fasting specimen is drawn, patient is given a:
A. 75 g glucose challenge dose (if not pregnant)
B. 100 g glucose challenge dose (if pregnant)
2. Draw blood in a plain, red-top tubes at: 1-hour, 2-hours, and 3-hours after glucose solution is administered.
Note: 1. Label specimens with the appropriate timed interval.
2. Indicate serum.
3. Label specimen appropriately (serum).
