Instructions
Submit only 1 of the following specimens:|Catheterized Specimen|Avoid sending urine that has remained stagnant in the catheter tubing for any length of time, do not send catheter bag urine, and avoid sending urine from catheters that have been in place longer than 5-9 days. Clean catheter with an alcohol sponge, puncture with sterile needle, and collect in sterile syringe. Send 5 mL of urine in either a urine transport tube or a screw-capped, sterile urine container. Label container with patient's name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen (catheterized). Maintain sterility and forward promptly at ambient temperature only.|Note: Specimen source is required on request form for processing.|Clean-catch, Midstream specimen|Collect a clean-catch, midstream urine specimen as follows: Males: Prepare the obstetrical Towelette by opening the package (do not remove the Towelette until ready to use), and place them on the sink. Take the top off of the plastic urine container, and set it on the edge of the sink. Set the Towelettes and container so that they can be reached while urine while urinating. Holding back the foreskin with 1 hand , if nessary, use the first Towelette to wash the end of penis. Discard the first Towelette in the wastebasket. Continue holding back the foreskin and gently rinse the end of the penis using the second and third Towelette, discarding them in the wastebasket when done. Continue holding back the foreskin and begin urinate into the toilet. Females: Prepare the obsterical Towelette by opening the packages (do not remove the Towelette until ready to use), and place them on the sink. Take the top off of the plastic urine container, and set it on the edge of the sink. Set the Towelettes and container so that they can be reached while urine while urinating. Pull panties below the knees so they will not interfere with urine collection. With 2 fingers of 1 hand, hold the outer folds of vagina apart. With the other hand, gently wash the vaginal area from the front to the back, using the first Towelette. After this step, throw away the first Towelette in the wastebasket. Still holding the outer vaginal skin away from the opening through which urination takes place, rinse the area from front to back using Towelette #2, discard, and then repeat with Towelette #3. Continue holding outer vaginal folds apart and begin to urinate into the toliet. lean slightly forward so that the urine flows directly down without running along the skin. After the first few teaspoons, place the screw-capped, sterile container under the stream of urine and collect the rest of the urine in the container. Even 1/4 cup is an adequate specimen for the test. After collection, tighten the cap on the container securely and wash any spilled urine from the outside of the container. Send 5 mL of urine in either a urine transport tube or a screw-capped, sterile container. Label container with patient's name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen (clean-catch, mid-stream). Maintain sterility and forward promptly at ambient temperature only.|Note: Specimen source is required on request form for processing.|Suprapubic aspirate|Clean suprapubic skin with iodine followed by alcohol. Be sure at least 4-6 hours has elapsed since last urination. Insert 22-gauge needle attached to a 20 mL syringe into the skin at about 30 degree angle to abdominal wall, immediately superior to the symphysis in the midline. Aspirating as one penetrates, stop as urine is obtained and fill the syringe with 5 mL of urine. Send 5 mL of urine in either a urine transport tube or a screw-capped, sterile urine container. Label container with patient's name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen 9suprapubic aspirate).
