If culture is positive, identification will be performed at an additional charge (CPT code(s): 87077 or 87140 or 87147 or 87149).

Preferred Specimen
Minimum: 1 gram or 1 mL stool submitted in an Cary-Blair culture transport medium

Other Acceptable Specimens
Stool submitted in Amies Gel transport medium (blue-cap), or liquid transport medium (red-cap)

Collect in clean, dry container and then transfer a minimum of 1 gram or 1 mL into a Cary-Blair stool culture transport medium. Fluid level should reach line on vial.

Frozen: Unacceptable

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Ova and Parasite Para-Pak® transport system containing formalin and PVA • Frozen or unpreserved stool • Expired transport device

Bacteriologic Culture, Aerobic

Special isolation procedure on bile esculin azide agar with 6 mcg/mL vancomycin. Identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing when appropriate

Set up: Daily a.m., p.m., nights; Report available: 3-5 days

Reference Range
No VRE isolated

Clinical Significance
The VRE culture screen permits rapid detection of those patients who are infected or colonized with VRE.
