 When submitted with a urine culture tube, a bacterial culture is set up based on defined criteria. (WBC >10 cells/hpf or Child less than 2 years of age.)

Preferred Specimen
Fresh urine in urine transport tube PLUS urine culture tube.


Minimum Volume
3.0 mL, preferred volume 10 mL for urine transport tube
2.0 mL for culture tube

Urine Transport Tube = Room Temperature
Collection cup = Refrigerated


Specimen Stability
Unpreserved Urine Cup
     Room Temperature (15-25 degrees C) = 2 hours
     Refrigerated (2-8 degrees C) = 24 hours
     Frozen (-20 degrees C) = N/A

UA Preservative Tube (Red/Yellow)
     Room Temperature (15-25 degrees C) = 3 days
     Refrigerated (2-8 degrees C) = 3 days
     Frozen (-20 degrees C) = N/A

 Urine Culture Tube:
     Room Temperature = 2 days 
     Refrigerated = 2 days
 


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Past specimen stability times, incorrect transport container, insufficient sample volume.
