Random stool specimen in Ova & Parasite transport vials. 24 hour urine is acceptable for schistosomes. (minimum 5 mL of stool)

Room Temperature for PVA and Formalin transport tube.
Refrigerate fresh urine specimens
For specimen integrity in the lock box

Specimen Stability

Room Temperature = months in proper transport tube. Hours if not in transport tube
Refrigeration = slows the degeneration of parasitc forms
Frozen = unacceptable

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)

Specimen rejected on culturette swab or if frozen.

Clinical Significance

Diseases caused by human parasites remain on a worldwide basis among the principle causes of morbidity and mortality. Correct diagnosis of intestinal parasitic infection depends on proper collection, transport, detection and identification of parasites in stool specimens. Symptoms range from malaise to death. Treatment is dependent upon examining multiple stool exams due to the erratic shed rates of some parasites.
