Clinical Significance
Giardiasis is an important human intestinal disease in most areas of the world and giardia lamblia is the most frequently identified parasite in the U.S. The giardia antigen test is the most sensitive method to detect this agent. This test may be useful to physicians whose patient a) lives in or has traveled to an area where giardia incidence is high, b) is a child c) during seasons of highest giardia incidence or d) has other risk factors as described in MMWR Surveillance Summaries from January 28, 2005.
