Clinical Significance
Brucellosis is a systemic infection that can involve many organs and tissues. Symptoms of brucellosis are acute in approximately half of the cases and insidious in the rest. They usually begin 2-8 weeks after exposure and are non-specific. Patients are sometimes misdiagnosed as having flu (fever, sweats, malaise, anorexia, headache and back pains). An "undulant" fever pattern is observed if patients go untreated for long periods of time. Some patients complain of malodorous sweat and a peculiar taste in the mouth. Mild lymphadenopathy occurs in 10-20 percent and splenomegaly in 20-30 percent of cases. With appropriate treatment most patients recover within weeks to months, although a minority will experience a more delayed recovery.
