Preferred Specimen
Number of cultures: 2 - 3 separate sets (each set consisting of 2 10mL bottles) should be collected (collection of only a single blood culture set will miss approximately 20% of the cases detected with 3 culture sets). Adults - 20 mL (2 -10 mL bottle)
Instructions
Blood (venous or arterial)
1. Prepare the site using an iodophor or betadine. Similarly, wipe the rubber diaphragm on the blood culture bottles.
2. Allow the disinfectant to dry completely.
3. Collect the blood and inoculate both bottles and split evenly between both bottles.
4. Submit both bottles in a ziplock bag in case of leakage.
5. DO NOT INCUBATE prior to submission. Submit at room temperature.
