Semen Analysis

Message
Specimen must arrive at Mayo within 24 hours of collection. Send specimen to Mayo Monday through Thursday only and not the day before a holiday.  If holiday falls on a Saturday, holiday will be observed on the preceding Friday.  Sunday holidays are observed on the following Monday. Specimen should be collected and packaged as close to shipping time as possible (from Alverno).  Mayo Laboratory does not perform testing on weekends.

Patient Preparation
Contact the Central Lab to obtain a collection kit and instructions from the Reference department.

Sample Collection:
  • Patient/Client will need to provide pH, volume, and viscosity of the sample before it is placed into the transport media. This must be done within one hour of collection.
  • Once the sample is placed in the media, pH, volume, and viscosity cannot be obtained.
  • The transport media must be at room temperature before adding the specimen.


Instructions
The Central lab will accept samples for both tests under the following conditions:
  • Samples will only be accepted Monday thru Thursday
  • Inform patient to deliver by 11:30 am (Alverno needs time to measure total volume and transfer sample to preserved collection kit for transport to Mayo)
  • Mayo must be contacted before noon to dispatch a courier
  • Alverno will not accept samples past 11:30 am
  • Sample must be received at Alverno within 30 minutes of collection (both post-vasectomy and semen analysis tests)
  • Sample must be maintained at room temperature.  Extreme temperature fluctuations must be avoided.
  • The number of days abstained from ejaculation must be included.

Report Available
Results available within 24 hours of receipt at Mayo.  Sample must arrive at testing facility within 24 hours of collection. The Central Lab will need to arrange a pick up from Mayo by noon.  Sample can only be sent Monday-Thursday with no holiday or weekend testing performed.  Testing will be performed if >24 hours but <48 hours with a disclaimer.
