Clinical Significance
Fibrinogen is a protein essential for blood clot formation. This test may be useful in patients with unexplained or prolonged bleeding, thrombosis, abnormal PT and/or PTT results, undergoing treatment for abnormal fibrinolysis or clotting dysfunction. High fibrinogen levels have also been associated with coronary heart disease and peripheral arterial disease.
