Instructions
Prepare smears within 1 hour of collection. Air dry slides. Once slides are dry, stain and place in a slide holder.

Specimen Stability
Slides submit at room temperature
EDTA whole blood submit refrigerated. If sample is left at room temperature for more than 1 hour, the parasite morphology can change and make definitive identification more difficult.

- Sample will reflex to Malarial Detection and Speciation by PCR except for Illinois patients which will be submitted to the Illinois Department of Public Health for Malarial PCR testing.

Clinical Significance
