Clinical Significance
The total 25-OH Vitamin D level includes the D2 and D3 forms as part of the total result. It is the predominant circulating form of Vitamin D and is considered to be the most reliable index of a person's Vitamin D nutritional status. It reflects Vitamin D produced cutaneously and that obtained from food and supplements.
This test is appropriate for initial quantitation of Vitamin D in patients who are at high risk for deficiency, including obesity, osteoporosis, and chronic conditions affecting Vitmin D metabolism and for following patients on supplemental therapy.
