Clinical Significance

The direct antiglobulin test (DAT or direct Coombs test) is used detect antibodies attached to red blood cells. It is primarily used to help diagnose the cause of hemolytic anemia but may also be used to help diagnose hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN) or a blood transfusion reaction.
