Preferred Specimen
ThinPrep PreservCyt vial (GREEN)

The green vial allows distinction from the pink. Samples will not be rejected if collected in the pink vial.  However, anal paps cannot be processed in the same manner as a traditional ThinPrep pap.  See Additional Information below for collection information.

Sample discarded at 7 days


Specimen Stability
  • Sample submitted in PreservCyt:  6 weeks from the date of collection maintained at room temperature
  • Sample submitted in CytoLyt:  8 days at room temperature


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Samples will be rejected if collected using a lubricant containing carbomers.  See Additional Information below for the approved list of lubricants.

Report Available
Within 3 days of receipt at the laboratory.


Reference Range
Reporting follows the Bethesda system for anal cytology.


Clinical Significance
Anal paps do not require a screening or diagnostic selection. This test is used to detect pre-malignant cells.
