Clinical Significance
Smooth muscle antibodies are detected in 85% of chronic active hepatitis cases and in < 50% of primary biliary cirrhosis cases.  They are usually negative in extrahepatic biliary obstruction, drug induced liver disease, viral hepatitis and hepatoma.
