URINALYSIS WITH REFLEX CULTURE

Message

Due to the possibility of cross-contamination, aliquot specimens that have undergone automated microscopy are exempt from add-on testing.  If add-on testing is desired, please send an additional aliquot specimen.

Preferred Specimen
Sterile Collection Kit (Gray top tube is used for culture if needed; cannot be used for UA due to the preservative).  A cup or yellow tube and the gray top should be collected

4 mL

Refrigerate if not tested within 2 hours

2-8°C up to 1 day


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)

Contaminated with feces or tissue, insufficient volume, excessive leakage in transport pouch, or non-preserved at room temperature.

Wavelength reflectance and refractive index; laminated flow cytometry

Report Available
Urinalysis available within 24 hours of receipt at the performing laboratory.  Stat testing is available.
Negative culture will be reported within 18-24 hours.


Clinical Significance

Microscopic exam will be performed only if dipstick is positive for blood, leukocyte esterase, nitrite, protein, or glucose >500 mg/dL.


Culture will be performed if >10 WBCs / hpf (per high-powered field) AND the leukocyte esterase or the nitrite is positive.
