Minimum Volume
  • Bone marrow 1 mL
  • Whole blood 1 mL
  • Tissue or lymph node 5x5 mm


Other Acceptable Specimens
Bone Marrow or Whole Blood: 1 Lavender tube EDTA


Transport Temperature
Whole blood or bone marrow: Room temperature
Lymph node or tissue: Refrigerate in RPMI



Specimen Stability
  • Whole blood or bone marrow: 15-30°C up to 2 days
  • Lymph node or tissue: 2-8°C in RPMI up to 2 days


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Clotted. Irretrievable samples will not be rejected.


Clinical Significance
Samples for potential FISH testing will need this code ordered. This code will allow the sample to be processed, fixed, and stored for up to 2 weeks. The RBC’s will be lysed and WBC’s will be fixed and frozen. This process cannot be used for add on Multiple Myeloma Panel by FISH (MMYFH)
Any add on FISH testing must be requested within 2 weeks sample fixing; refer to specific FISH Panel test code(s)
The Pathologist must call the Alverno Central Laboratory Client Services department to add-on a specific Heme FISH panel.
Automatic reflex FISH testing will not be performed
