Instructions
Centrifuge for complete separation of plasma or serum and red cells.  Separate and refrigerate until tested.

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)

The following conditions will result in a rejected sample:

  • Hemolyzed samples
  • Samples collected in EDTA, Oxalate, or Citrate anticoagulants

Clinical Significance
Iron (non-heme) measurements are used in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as iron deficiency anemia, hemochromatosis, and chronic renal disease.  Transferrin is the major iron carrying protein in the serum.
