ACTH STIMULATION

Message

Centrifuge within 2 hours of collection. If testing cannot be completed within 48 hours, freeze. Each sample MUST be labeled with the time of draw.

This test consists of three (3) phlebotomy draws: Baseline (pre-injection); 30 min (post-injection); and a 60 min (post-injection)

Instructions

Allow specimen to clot completely at room temperature. Separate serum or plasma from cells ASAP or within 2 hours of collection. Specimen must be labeled with time drawn.

2-8°C up to 2 days; 15-30°C up to 8 hours; Frozen samples are stable



Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)

Hemolyzed samples will be rejected.

Reference Range
A normal response is defined as a cortisol level of >18-20 ug/dL at any time point OR an increment of >7.3 ug/dL from the baseline cortisol level.


Clinical Significance

Used as an aid in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the adrenal gland
