Clinical Significance
The antifungal drug itraconazole is active in the treatment of aspergillosis, blastomycosis, histoplasmosis, sporotrichosis, and onychomycosis. It is a protein-bound drug and thus has negligible CSFpenetration. It may also be utilized in the treatment of systemic candidiasis and cryptococcosis, especially when other drugs are contraindicated or ineffective. The chronic nature of fungal infections demands constant monitoring of itraconazole levels within a patient to ensure that adequate therapeutic levels of the drug are administered, absorbed and subsequently excreted.
