Transfer stool into Total-Fix vial. Fill to line on transport vial. Mix contents thoroughly until homogenous.


Transport Container
Preferred: 10 grams (5 grams minimum) or 10 mL (5 mL minimum) stool preserved in Total-fix transport vial

Acceptable: Stool preserved in 10% formalin or Cary-Blair transport vial
 


Transport Temperature
 Room temperature.


Specimen Stability
Room temperature: 18 months; Refrigerated and Frozen: Unacceptable


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Unpreserved stool; Stool preserved in medium other than those listed as acceptable; Stool specimens that have been previously concentrated

Clinical Significance
Cryptosporidium is the causative agent of Cryptosporidiosis. Symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal pain and respiratory problems lasting from several days to more than a month and often leading to presistant infection or death.
