Instructions
Feces:
1. Collect a stool specimen in a bedpan or waxed container (do not contaminate with urine).
2. Examine the specimen for mucus or blood and sample these areas if present.
3. Unscrew the cap of the Cary Blair transport vial and add approximately 1 gram of fecal material.
4. Securely refasten the cap and vigorously shake the vial to mix stool with transport medium.
Anal swabs:
1. Insert the swab into the rectum (through the anal sphincter) and rotate gently.
2. Remove the swab and place into transport medium.

Transport Container
See specimen collection information. Submit 1 gram stool in Cary Blair transport vial or anal swab (aerobic/anaerobic transport container).
Alternate container: Samples too small to allow sufficient material to be placed into the appropriate transport container may be submitted refrigerated in a sterile screw capped container. However, strong consideration should be given to collection of another sample. Small samples are subject to rejection.

Transport Temperature
Cary Blair transport vial or aerobic/anaerobic container: Ambient unless recover of Shigella is required then transport refrigerated; Alternate container: Refrigerated.
Specimen Stability
Transport as quickly as possible.
