Instructions
Do not use first morning void, late evening specimen (after 8 p.m.), or specimen after excessive fluid intake.

Random urine. Protect from light. Do not use preservatives.

Urine preserved with 1 mL concentrated glacial acetic acid or 1 mL 6N HCl, protected from light will be accepted but NOT PREFERRED.


Transport Container
Protect from light. Transfer a 2 mL aliquot from well-mixed random collection to an amber transport tube (preferred) or protect the container from light with foil or place in an amber bag. (Min: 0.6 mL)


Transport Temperature
Refrigerated.


Specimen Stability
Ambient: Unacceptable; Refrigerated: 7 days; Frozen: 30 days

Clinical Significance
ALA is a precursor to uroporphyrin, coproporphyrin, and protoporphyrin. Concentrations of ALA are greatly increased in many patients with acute neurological forms of porphyrias and in some patients with chronic alcohol abuse.
