Includes Gram Stain. Anaerobic culture is appropriate for surgically collected specimens and must be ordered as a separate test, but the same sample may be used for both cultures. Aerobic culture is performed on other sinus sources.


Instructions
Collect specimen according to your institution's protocol or call client services. Submit one of the following sources: sinus contents, sinus drainage, surgical sinus specimen, or
Nasopharynx swab:
1. Pass the mini-tip swab into the nasopharynx and allow secretions to absorb for 5 seconds.
2. Withdraw the swab and place into transport medium.
3. Submit at room temperature.


Transport Container
Depending on the source, acceptable containers include: Surgically collected specimens should be submitted in an anaerobic transport system. Other sinus sources can be submitted in sterile screw capped container or nasopharyngeal swab in aerobic/anaerobic transport system.


Transport Temperature
Ambient.


Specimen Stability
Transport as quickly as possible.


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Samples collected by invasive procedures are never rejected, but results may be qualified.

Clinical Significance
Provides information as to the presence or absence of organisms in the collected samples. Isolated organisms can be evaluated for clinical significance and susceptibiltiy testing performed to aid in the treatment of the clinical condition.
