Instructions
Body fluid in a container with no additives. Protect from light. Specify source of body fluid on requisition.


Transport Container
Protect from light. Collect body fluid in a container with no additives. Body fluid should be centrifuged and aliquoted to separate from cells. Transport 2 mL body fluid in an amber transport tube (preferred) or protect the transport container from light with foil or place in an amber bag. (Min. 0.5 mL)



Transport Temperature
Refrigerated.


Specimen Stability
After protecting from light: Ambient: 24 hours; Refrigerated: 7 days; Frozen: Acceptable for longer storage

Clinical Significance
Analysis of bilirubin in body fluid is useful for differentiation between transudative and exudative body fluid when performed with serum bilirubin and body fluid and serum protein and lactate dehydrogenase.
