Medical device or component: place in sterile container with gauze moistened with non bacteriostatic saline to prevent drying.

Clinical Significance

This culture code is meant for medical devices that have been removed from a patient. This includes cardioverter defibrillators, venous access ports, pacemakers and associated leads, pins. Culture of the implant site would also be ordered under this code if the device is also being submitted.

American Heart Association 2010 guidelines are that routine microbiologic studies should not be performed on devices removed for non-infectious reasons.

Cultures taken post surgery should be ordered under this code, but as a wound or tissue culture.
