Clinical Significance
Testing for anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA) is useful in the diagnosis of vasculitides such as Wegener’s granulomatosis, polyarteritis nodosa and Churg-Strauss syndrome. These autoantibodies are frequently directed toward enzymes within the neutrophil primary granules such as myeloperoxidase (MPO) and serine proteinase 3 (PR3).
