The ESwab Liquid Amies fluid maintains the viability of diverse bacteria. Do not send a dry ESwab as this will lead to unsatisfactory results.

Instructions
Vagina:
1. Wipe away any excessive amounts of secretion or discharge.
2. Using E-swab:
1. Open the peel pouch.
2. Remove the swab.
3. Collect the patient sample using the swab. Swab the mucosa high in the vaginal canal.
4. Remove the screw cap from the tube and insert the swab all the way to the bottom of the tube.
5. Holding the swab shaft close to the rim of the tube, and keeping the tube away from your face,
break the applicator shaft at the pink breakpoint indication line.
6. Screw the cap on tightly to prevent leakage.
7. Dispose of the swab shaft in a regular trash receptacle.
8. Apply patient identification label or write patient information on the tube label.

Vulva:
1. Wipe away any excessive amounts of discharge or exudate and swab the vulvar area. Do not simply sample discharge as it will contain colonizing bacteria in addition to any pathogens.
2. Submit as for vagina. (see above)

Cervix, Endocervix:
1. Visualize the cervix using a speculum without lubricant.
2. Wipe the cervix clean of vaginal secretions.
3. Gently compress the blades of the speculum and use a rotating motion with the swab to obtain exudate.
4. Submit as for vagina. (see above)

Urethra:
1. Wipe off exudate from the urethral orifice.
2. If copious discharge is present, this may be collected and inoculated into the E-swab transport media as described above.
3. If discharge is not present, strip and massage the urethra to obtain material and proceed proceed by inoculating the E-swab transport media.
4. If discharge cannot be obtained, pass a mini tip swab green cap E-swab) at least 2 cm into the urethra to obtain a specimen. Inoculate E-swab transport media. (see vagina above)

Semen & Prostatic Fluid:
Submit in sterile container.

Anal swabs:
1. Insert the swab into the rectum (through the anal sphincter) and rotate gently.
2. Remove the swab.
3. Submit as for vagina. (see above)

Throat:
1. Swab the tonsils, and areas of exudate, or inflammation. Avoid the tongue and oral membranes.
2. Submit as for vagina. (see above)


Transport Container
Submit an inoculated E-Swab transport media. Submit semen or prostatic fluid in a sterile screw capped container. See specimen collection information.

If the tube spills its contents prior to inserting the swab, the liquid is non-toxic. Simply put the swab into another tube before sending it to the laboratory and discard the spilled tube.
