CPT Codes

Includes
Includes examination of concentrated sample and trichrome stained smear.
Instructions
O & P samples should be collected over a period of several days as some parasites exhibit 'showering' of organisms. If multiple same-day samples are submitted, only one will be processed.
Stool:
O & P Transport (Total Fix):
1. Have the patient defecate into a clean container without contaminating the sample with urine or water (these will destroy protozoan forms).
2. Examine the specimen for blood, mucus, or adult worms and preferentially sample these sites. If blood or mucus is not present, sample a representative area of the specimen.
3. Unscrew the cap of the vial of the O & P Transport and using the attached spork, place enough stool into the container to bring the fluid level up to, but not beyond the red line on the container's label.
4. Thoroughly break up the stool, replace the lid securely and shake the container vigorously.
Note: It is critical that the stool be thoroughly emulsified.
5. Replace the vial into the zip lock bag.

Transport Container
See specimen collection information. Stool specimens must be preserved as soon as possilble but no later than 1 hour after collection. Submit O & P Transport.
Alternate container: Samples too small to allow sufficient material to be placed into the appropriate transport container may be submitted refrigerated in a sterile screw capped container. Transport to lab within 1 hour of collection. However, strong consideration should be given to collection of another sample. Small samples are subject to rejection.

Transport Temperature
O & P Transport: Ambient; Alternate container: Refrigerated.
Specimen Stability
Transport as quickly as possible.
Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
If multiple same-day samples are submitted, only one will be processed; Small samples are subject to rejection. Fresh, unpreserved specimens received after 1 hour of collection are unacceptable.
