Instructions
Lavender (EDTA). Do not refrigerate or freeze.

If the platelet count is less than 20,000/ccm, submit 7-10 mL of whole blood.
Platelet Count Minimum Volume to Submit
greater than ot equal to 45,000 2 mL
20,000-45,000 5 mL
less than 20,000 10 mL


Transport Container
Transport whole blood.
Pediatric: The minimum volume is platelet count dependent. If possible, submit at least 1 mL EDTA blood.


Transport Temperature
Ambient.


Specimen Stability
Ambient: 6 days; Refrigerated: Unacceptable; Frozen: Unacceptable

Clinical Significance
Thrombocytopenia that is refractory to platelet transfusions may be due to direct platelet antibody. Testing is useful to differentiate immune from nonimmune disorders.
