Instructions
Materials needed:
Specimen slide, Lead #2 pencil, cardboard slide holder, cytofixative spray, and Spatula/Brush combination.
Collection:
Label the frosted end of the slide with the patient's first and last name and date of birth using the #2 pencil.
Ayre Spatula-- Scrape the ectocervical area around the endocervical os with the Ayre spatula using a rotating motion. Smear the collected material on one half of the glass slide. Spray fix immediately using cytofixative spray.
Endocervical Brush--Using the endocervical brush insert the brush tip into the endocervical canal and rotate one half to one complete turn. Roll this material on the remaining half of the glass slide. Spray fix immediately using the cytofixative spray.
Allow slide to dry and place in cardboard slide folder.

Transport Container
Place the cardboard carrier in a plastic specimen bag along with a completed requisition for transport to the laboratory.
